Insurance Policy for a Coral Reef

The government of Indonesia is seeking creative ways to finance and organize reef restoration funding after a natural disaster. Newest efforts by Konservasi Indonesia (KI) is a literal insurance policy that will insure against the risk of environmental impact on a reef area. The idea is very novel for Indonesia but had been tested in other locations successfully. and aims to help with quick funding after a high rain event for example that can damage the coral reef. KI Ocean Program Director Budiati Prasetiamartati is involved with the development and implementation of the conservation efforts. KI is part of a group that is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to conduct a feasibility study. In this study that is spearheaded with the support of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries two locations have been identified for this project. Nusa Penida in Bali and Rote Ndao in East Tenggara, both of which are located in conservation programs.

Prasetiamartati explains that insurance would cover marine restoration projects based on predetermined factors that would trigger the release of funding. Flash floods after high rainfall events can damage reefs for example and could be specified as a condition for the insurance payout to be triggered. The main advantage would be the speed at which preservation efforts could be financed and started instead of long waiting times to get government funding approved.
