People often ask us where exactly is Bali. Bali is a small volcanic island is in the heart of the island nation Indonesia in southeast Asia. Defining which ocean surrounds Bali is a bit trickier. Actually, Bali has an interesting location right between the Indian Ocean with strong undercurrent of plankton rich water from the antarctic, and the pacific ocean with its strong trade winds pushing waters to the north of Indonesia. Directly between the Bali and its neighboring island Lombok runs a current called the Lombok Straight. This very strong currents carry plenty of plankton and larvae to the waters of Bali. It is making our pretty island the ideal location to grow a wider variety of coral in the protected lagoons off its coast. The antarctic flow brings a high level of minerals with the current, that are needed for marine life like coral to flourish. The drawback of those strong current is that our location also sees a huge onslaught of plastic waste, often originated from far away. We are not in the big pacific plastic patch but some times it feels our little island is residing at the freeway that leads straight to it. The local government in Bali has enacted recent laws to curb the use and disposal of plastic. The idea is to prevent additional plastic waste to enter the ocean currents currents from Balis many small rivers and streams. A small step in the right direction to combat a larger problem. While the current provides us with life giving nutrients, it also exposes us to environmental issues generated in other countries far away. For a coral farm like ours, the protection of the ocean is important. We see first hand that nothing happens isolated in a vacuum. We are an intricate part of a greater whole. Even mundane things that happen far away, will end up effecting us and others down the stream.
The process of cultivating coral in underwater farms is intricate and relies on so many factors. We feel very privileged to be able to take advantage of our beautiful location with its eternal currents and their nourishing plankton cargo. Bali is a cornerstone of the coral triangular in which the world most abundant and diverse coral reefs reside. Our contribution is making cultivated life coral available to see and own for many people around the globe. Together with our coral wholesale distributors we serve a broad audience that is able to enjoy the wonders that lie beneath our waters. When tending to our aquaculture operation in our daily routine we don’t always think about how the ocean currents connect us all. For our team of specialists, the act of nurturing coral to flourish and grow is often not much more than going with the flow.
